SAFETY ON THE RANGE
We cannot emphasize enough, the importance of respecting safety at all times and unequivocally.
Our sport is one of the safest, thanks to the safety rules implemented and there is no room for error. We consider that aspiring members with a firearms licence, are familiar with the basic rules of gun safety. If anyone is completely new to the sport, and never had basic training, please let us know. The club has rifles available if one does not have his/her own. Use of club rifles must be prearranged. We require new or aspiring shooters to attend and watch for the first time they attend the range, then to start at one of the shorter distances.
Chain of Command
The safety chain of command on the range is:
- Range Officer
- Scorer
- Shooter
In the event of any mishap during your application, the scorer must be advised immediately, and he will advise the range officer for a procedure to follow. This includes a misfire, a stuck case, a loose trigger, or similar.
Rules to remember
- The bolt may only be inserted into the breech when one is in the shooting position and preparing to shoot.
- A rifle at the shooting position must always face down range until the rifle bolt is removed, barrel inspected by the scorer or RO and the Empty Chamber Indicator inserted. Rifle may then be removed from the mound.
- An ECI must be inserted at all times the bolt is out of the breech. (Empty Chamber Indicator)
- Leave the breech open while waiting for your turn to shoot.
- Treat a rifle as if it were loaded at all times. Never point the rifle at anyone, even as a joke.
Always obey the Range Officer who is responsible for safety on the range.
Shooter may commence shooting only when the range officer has declared the range open and the main red flags are up. (Blue flag at the gate means range is closed and no rifles are permitted on the mound, as people will be moving forward of the firing line.)
The scorer will ask for the shooter to vigorously toggle the bolt a few times to confirm the trigger will not discharge by this type of motion.
The barrel must be over the shooting safety line at all times and pointing downrange. No rifles may be fired with the barrel behind this line.
Your round of 12 or sometimes 17 shots may begin.
When one has finished one’s application, the bolt and magazine, if used, must be removed and the barrel must be inspected by the scorer, or range officer and cleared. Until then, the rifle is to remain pointing downrange and not to be removed from the firing position.
All equipment must be removed off the mound after your rifle has been cleared.
TEAM CAPTAIN
The Team Captain is responsible for the organization of the shooting, order of shooting and the harmony and cohesion of the shooters. He too is engaged in the safety of the shooter and shooting practices.
